In this series of brief posts, I’m sharing “touchstones” of political opposition that I find inspiring and reassuring. Everyday, the Trump administration furnishes fresh cause for patriotic outrage. The situation is unprecedented, requiring that patriots everywhere fashion new, peaceable responses appropriate to the time. We can’t delegate this work to the nation’s ostensible leaders. They, too, are confused, be-nighted; some appear dangerously incapable of doing the right thing.
Only broad, peaceful, nonpartisan opposition can change the disposition of our legislatures and limit the harm that Trump is inflicting on the American people and our national identity.
In these circumstances, we can derive strength from the example of forebears who relied strictly on reason, principle, and conscience to oppose that which would rob humans of their natural dignity, their God-given rights.
I encourage you to listen to what Marianne Williamson has to say. The courage to stand up and speak out comes from being in touch with your own conscience, your own in-dwelling sense of goodness, your own inner light.
Please circulate this post to others and let me know what you think.
Hi Susan, good to see a new post here. And an excellent message. I find myself getting angry quite often (justifiably), but I remind myself to channel that anger away from violent thoughts, which come so easily. I agree with MW, and I hope her message and the ideas expressed can save our country from a truly violent civil war. One was enough, wasn’t it? On the other hand, the current DOJ apparently just removed a ban on trigger devices that make semi-automatic weapons into machine guns. And I have to say un-f*ing-believable!!!! These people are insane!
Peggy–thank you for checking in and for commenting. The political situation is disconcerting and dire. It is also unprecedented. Staying calm and positive requires fortitude. Everyone I know is struggling to make sense of the situation and to identify one or two goals to work toward. These “touchstones” I’m writing about are like magic glasses, helping us to divine what we can effectively do. Each one of these forceful truth-narratives is inspiring, comforting, and unifying. Unfortunately, the Trump administration has the power to inflict considerable harm on the nation, the people, and the economy over the next two years.
I have been transitioning my website to a new platform on SquareSpace in the wake of having moved with my husband and mother to Mequon from Chicago about 18 months ago. In the meantime, I’ve decided to resume publishing new material here because it just can’t wait. Thanks so much for your faithful engagement! We must carry on.
